A Hateful Year

In the first few months of President Donald Trump’s Presidency, we saw, thanks to the power of media, alarming numbers of racial crimes being committed. Now, this is not to say that there were low numbers before but let’s be honest, it has grown under his leadership. Last year we saw something that we thought was left back in the 1900s. In August 2017, Unite the Right rally, or famously known as the Charlottesville’s rally, where a 32-year-old woman was killed and several others were injured. This was the largest gathering of White Nationalists to gather in decades, at least publically. This was a rally based on pure hate of Blacks and other minorities, and yet President Trump stated that there were “very fine” people on both sides. Well, it’s not like we didn’t know he was a bigot.

Just recently, although it is not being considered a race-based crime or an act of terrorism by our incompetent fool of a president, the Texas bomber targeted African American residents through bombs delivered as packages. With this recent incident, I can’t help but think about all that took place last year.

Below is a list of only a few incidents that took place at the beginning of the 2017 year within the DMV area. Please feel free to send me recent reports and questions.

THE WASHINGTON POST: A noose was found Saturday on the Mall, at least the third in that area in recent weeks.

NBC WASHINGTON: Montgomery County Police said the synthetic rope noose was found in a tree in a common area near the Heron’s Cove Condominium parking lot about 8 a.m.

CNN: For the second time in a week, a noose was found on Smithsonian grounds — this time, at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture.

CNN: A noose has been found at a construction site in the District of Columbia, police said — at least the fifth time this symbol of racial violence has turned up in the Washington area recently.

WTOP: The hate symbol was found displayed by a front door in the 2100 block of 36th Place SE on Thursday, according to a D.C. police report.

USA TODAY: A section of rope was found near the MLK Memorial in Washington on Friday, two days after a noose was discovered inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture, U.S. Park Police said.
